The quarterly journal has always been a feature of the HCKA from the start. An excerpt from the very first issue is this 1933 Folbot advert. An article on military use of canoes talks about Lt. R Courtney, Royal Engineers, as being the first British person to suggest canoes as military equipment during WW2 and in fact it was a German builder living in London whose folding canoes were chosen - Folbots. The recipe hasn’t changed for what is now ‘Paddles Past’ - 30 or so pages of articles and illustrations covering the whole of canoe history, along with revealing adverts from the period, club news and members’ contributions. These insights from the past explain a lot about boats and practice today. You can order a free sample copy from our Secretary. |
